Cozy ideas that bring your family (or relationship) closer — right here in our beautiful Utah backyard

November in Utah is one of my favorite months. The canyon colors are still hanging on, the air turns perfectly crisp, and there’s this quiet little pause before the holidays arrive in full force.

It’s the perfect time to slow down, breathe, and create memories that feel like home.

Whether you're a couple building traditions or a family with little ones, here are five simple November traditions you can start right here in Utah — no stress, no over-planning. Just connection, cozy vibes, and a little magic.

1. Gratitude Sticky Notes Wall

All you need is a stack of sticky notes and a wall, mirror, or fridge.

Every day, write one thing you're grateful for — big or small.

  • ā€œWarm blankets and yellow leavesā€
  • ā€œPenny’s giggles when she runs through the yardā€
  • ā€œHot cocoa seasonā€
  • ā€œA partner who holds my hand in the coldā€

Kids LOVE this one. Their answers are usually adorable and hilarious (ā€œgrateful for mac & cheeseā€ always makes the list somewhere šŸ˜‚).

By Thanksgiving, you've got a wall of happy reminders waiting for you.

2. Utah Fall Drive Tradition

Utah doesn’t play when it comes to fall drives. If you haven’t taken one yet this fall, it’s not too late. Some of my favorite spots:

  • Alpine Loop (AF Canyon) — late fall magic + mountain views
  • Emigration Canyon and East Canyon — pair it with a brunch stop
  • Big Cottonwood Canyon — Millcreek views are unreal at sunset
  • Provo Canyon — always a classic

Grab a playlist, a thermos of cider, and someone you love — then just drive.

3. Soup + Cozy Movie Night

Pick a night each week in November and make it ā€œsoup & cozy movie night.ā€

Some Utah-fall-approved soups:

  • Butternut squash & cream
  • Chicken noodle with herbs from the garden (or Smith’s 😌)
  • Creamy cauliflower or broccoli cheddar (a personal favorite! Pro tip: Add ground beef to broccoli cheddar soup for a heartier version of this classic.)

Throw on a family favorite movie or a comfort classic. Pajamas are mandatory.

Blanket fort, also mandatory.

4. ā€œThankful Togetherā€ Board

Choose one spot in your house — chalkboard, fridge, whiteboard — and write down things that made you smile this week. Not just ā€œbig lifeā€ things… the tiny stuff matters most:

  • Someone held the door for you at Crumbl.
  • You found the good parking at Harmon's first try
  • A cozy sunset by Utah Lake
  • Kids snuggling on the couch without fighting (a miracle)

It becomes a living record of happiness. ā¤ļø

5. Annual November Photo Tradition

Take ONE photo on the same week every November.

Nothing formal — just real life.

  • Bedhead + blankets
  • Out in the yard with the crunchy leaves
  • At the kitchen table with hot cocoa
  • On a canyon walk near Draper (Corner Canyon is a personal favorite!)

Utah gives us the perfect backdrop — mountains, fall colors, cozy light… all doing half the work for us.

One photo each week adds up fast, and one day it’ll mean more than you realize.

Final Thoughts

Traditions don’t have to be big to be meaningful.

Sometimes it’s the small routines — warm soup, sticky notes, car rides — that become the moments you look back on.

If you start any of these, tag me! I’d love to see your family or cozy couple traditions this season. šŸ“ø

And of course, if you want to make a November photo session part of your yearly tradition…

I’m here for it.

Nothing makes me happier than capturing love in this season of gratitude and gold-toned light.
